Opening Reception Friday, March 3rd, 2017 from 7pm – 11pm

Last Rites Gallery is pleased to present “Beyond Flesh”, a two-person exhibition featuring new works from Paul Cristina and Eric Lacombe. “Beyond Flesh” seeks to embrace the inner grotesqueness and torment we face within ourselves. Lacombe and Cristina’s textured figures serve as manifestations of collectively recognized monsters existing within society, as well as our minds. Through the narrative of paintings and sculptures, viewers are invited into the vision of a beautiful, yet unsettling world. The work carries a haunting familiarity, as the figures reflecting back are but personifications giving shape to the inner anxieties that lay within us all.

Eric Lacombe is a multi-skilled, self-taught artist based in Lyon, France. His work has been conceived to investigate the most recondite corners of the human mind, populated by depictions and transfigurations of the human body in the context of a plain, unadorned metaphysical scenery. Eric’s works are characterized by a well-thought-out juxtaposition of figurative elements and expressionistic brushstrokes. Lacombe meticulously deconstructs the subjects of his compositions to highlight their three-dimensional qualities and invite the viewers to come up with their own interpretation of the work.

Paul Cristina is a self-taught artist born in Cleveland, Ohio, now based in Charleston, South Carolina. Paul has continued to develop his creative sensibilities through the study of books, film, music, people and photographic images. These sources of education continue to inform his work through the experimentation of various style and media. He has also worked several years as a paramedic, which allowed for a stark insight and investigation into the often disturbing aspects of society and human behavior. This experience involuntarily informs the work and provokes continual contemplation toward the underbelly of life, as we know it.

“Beyond Flesh” will be on view at 325 W 38th Street #1, New York, NY 10018 from March 3rd – March 25th, 2017. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 3rd from 7pm – 11pm.
