Dark Nature

Zoe Keller, “Gather”, Graphite on paper, 14″ x 18″

On Saturday, June 3rd, 2017, Last Rites Gallery is pleased to present, “Dark Nature”, a group exhibition of works by Caitlin Hackett, Kikyz1313, Zoe Keller, Deidra Leigh, Nunzio Paci, Alex Reisfar, Dylan Garrett Smith, and Annie Terrazzo.

During modern times humans need not directly interact with nature to stay alive. We do not need to hunt for our food, and we (mostly) are not at risk of being hunted by other organisms in the natural world. We forget nature has a face beyond its romantic sunrises and bright colored flowers. It has become unimportant to consider authentic processes of life, how those processes interact with each other, and particularly, how brutal they can be.

Dark Nature seeks to reveal the Mother Nature’s canines. Artists focus on the natural decay of both humans and animals, parasitical relationships necessary for survival and growth through a variety of mixed media work. The exhibition aims to incite a conversation about the inevitable effects of existence humans and animals cast. The effects often seen as terrifying, and savage as for one party to survive, another must suffer.

The opening reception for “Dark Nature” will be hosted Saturday, June 3rd 2017, from 7-11pm at Last Rites Gallery. The reception is open to the public, and the exhibition is on view through July 1st, 2017.
