William Basso – Conglomerate

October 6th – 21st, 2017
Mezzanine Gallery

Last Rites Gallery is delighted to present the solo exhibition of mixed media artist William Basso titled “Conglomerate”. This series weaves together Basso’s many differing disciplines with creative alchemy resulting in imaginary entities. His ideas emerge instinctively out of his subconscious and organically into his work.

The term “conglomerate” describes a larger unique whole deceptively formed by smaller distinctive parts, as well as the motif for Basso’s new body of work. His inorganic forms live theatrically, trapped in a flux of what they encompass, decorated by small distinctive details, and with unique traits that indicate humanoid creatures; these creatures hint at a fantastical reality with its own traditions that reap their dark nature in secrecy. Basso’s estranged characters inhabit eternally decaying settings lending credence to William’s love for east coast autumns, a season that reveals its macabre beauty in the patient death of all organic life. Of course autumn hosts Halloween in American culture, and Basso is no stranger to incorporating its decorative spirit into the macabre world he conjures.

“Conglomerate” also stems from Basso’s roots in juxtaposition; the mysteries that can birth from the pairing of older, rediscovered sketch book drawings for example, with his newer works inspires the exploration of the subliminal relationships that will appear in the juxtaposition. His experience in sculpting exceeds 30 years, and his need to express the realm of the three dimensions found its way into Basso’s organically evolving process.

Basso’s working methodology reflects the idea of a “conglomerate,” accumulating layers of smaller details in a complex, nontraditional process to create an artifact. Using technology organically in tandem with a hand made approach, Basso stages his images as a series of details, capturing separate elements with cameras and printing them in sectional fragments, to later be assembled into fuller compositions; working on top of these composites, the layers and layers of mixed mediums build up, evolving the distinctive parts into unique and full-embodying pieces.

William Basso is an American artist who grew up in a creative household surrounded by equal parts horror movies, comic books, and Renaissance or Eastern European art. After graduating from the Parsons School of Design, Basso became interested in special effects for the film industry and has contributed his artistry to many well-known films such as Edward Scissorhands, Terminator 2, and Jurassic Park. Basso has spent the last decade focusing on his personal artistic vision, creating mixed media works as well as taking on freelance projects. His award winning art has been exhibited in a number of galleries as well as being featured in SPECTRUM and The Society of Illustrators art annuals.
